Response to The Science of Selfies: How Pictures Help Us Claim Our Identity

I agreed with the view that Jennifer Ouellette has on selfies. She believes that it is part of our human nature to stake a claim of personal identity, and a selfie is a way of doing so. I really like this way of looking at selfies because I am, as most of us are, sick of hearing that selfies are narcissistic and self-centered. I take plenty of selfies, and I would like to think that I am a very humble, people-loving person. She also says that we all need to assert who we are. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then what better way to assert who you are then a selfie? Without a self identity a person is lost and trying to find themselves. Many people struggle with this and if a selfie is a cure to this problem, then why is it viewed as a bad thing? The time, place, and people in the selfie all help capture a moment in time that explains us as a person. This trend is growing and the people who view it as something bad need to get used to it. There is nothing self-centered about appreciating the beauty and unique face that God has given me. After all we are all created in his image.
